Buckle Up, Statesville: It’s National Seat Belt Day!

Last Updated 11/12/2025

Every year, November 14 marks National Seat Belt Day - a simple reminder that one click can save a life. At the Statesville Police Department, we see the difference seat belts make every day, and we’re encouraging everyone in our community to make buckling up second nature - every trip, every time.

Why It Matters

Seat belts are the single most effective safety feature in your vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • Seat belts saved nearly 15,000 lives in 2017 alone.
  • Wearing a seat belt in the front seat can reduce the risk of fatal injury by 45%.
  • In 2022, almost half of all passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes were unrestrained.

It only takes a few seconds to buckle up - and those seconds can mean the difference between life and death in a crash.

It’s More Than a Law - It’s a Lifesaving Habit

North Carolina law requires all drivers and passengers to wear seat belts, no matter where they’re sitting. But beyond avoiding a ticket, it’s about protecting yourself and those you care about.

Even if you’re just going down the street, most crashes happen within 25 miles of home. Whether you’re a driver or a passenger, young or old, buckling up is one of the easiest and most important choices you can make for your safety.

A Message from the Statesville Police Department

Our officers witness the impact of crashes that could have ended differently if everyone had been properly restrained. That’s why we’re reminding the community: seat belts save lives - plain and simple.

Before you shift into drive, take a second to check that everyone is buckled. Set the example for children and teens - because safe habits start with you.

Stay Safe, Statesville

This National Seat Belt Day, let’s commit to safer roads for everyone in our community. It’s one small action that makes a big difference - for you, your passengers, and your loved ones.

Buckle up, Statesville. Every seat, every ride, every time.
