National Crime Prevention Week: Building a Safer Community Together

Last Updated 12/19/2025

At the Statesville Police Department (SPD), we believe that crime prevention is a shared responsibility between law enforcement and the community. National Crime Prevention Week, observed September 1 - 7, 2025, is a reminder of the proactive steps we can all take to ensure the safety and security of our neighborhoods. This week gives us the opportunity to highlight the many ways we can work together to reduce crime, foster trust, and create a safer Statesville for everyone.

Understanding Crime Prevention

Crime prevention is more than responding after the fact - it’s about stopping crime before it happens. Through education, awareness, and collaboration, we can address root causes and reduce opportunities for crime. Together, we can make meaningful strides toward a safer city.

The Role of the Statesville Police Department

SPD is committed to protecting and serving our residents, not only through enforcement but also by empowering our community with knowledge and tools to stay safe. Our officers work daily to build partnerships, educate the public, and support programs that strengthen our neighborhoods.

Key Crime Prevention Tips

  • Join a Neighborhood Watch Program
    • One of the most effective ways to prevent crime is by staying connected. Our Neighborhood Watch groups bring residents together to look out for one another and report suspicious activity. If your neighborhood doesn’t yet have a program, consider starting one - SPD can help you get organized. Learn more about Neighborhood Watch here.
  • Secure Your Home & Property
    • Small actions make a big difference: lock doors and windows, install lighting or cameras, and keep valuables out of sight. Visible security measures reduce the likelihood of burglary and theft.
    • Going on Vacation? As a service to our citizens, the Statesville Police Department offers FREE vacation house checks for city residents who are living in single‐family homes or duplexes. Learn more here.
  • Stay Informed & Involved
  • Protect Against Identity Theft
    • Identity crimes continue to rise nationwide. Protect yourself by using strong passwords, shredding personal documents, and being careful with what you share online.
  • Report Suspicious Activity
    • Your eyes and ears are critical. If you observe suspicious or criminal activity that needs immediate police response, please CALL 911 or Statesville Police Telecommunications at 704-878-3406! If you would like to report suspicious or criminal activity that you observe occurring within the city limits of Statesville, please fill out the following online submission form here.

The Importance of Trust and Communication

Trust between police and community is the foundation of public safety. SPD encourages open communication - whether it’s through community events, social media, or face-to-face conversations with officers. When residents share concerns and ideas, we can better serve and protect.

Moving Forward Together

As we observe National Crime Prevention Week 2025, let’s reflect on what we’ve accomplished and recommit to the work still ahead. Crime prevention is not a one-week effort - it’s an ongoing partnership.

SPD will continue to invest in programs and initiatives that promote safety, but we cannot do it alone.

We need your partnership, vigilance, and commitment to help make Statesville a safer place for everyone.
