March 17, 2024 – Update on Gay Street Shooting Incident

On March 15, 2024, James Adrian Griffin, Jr. was medically cleared and discharged from Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. Griffin, Jr. had been receiving treatment following injuries sustained in the shooting incident on Gay Street.

Following his release, Griffin, Jr. was taken into custody by the United States Marshal’s Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force.  This action was in response to outstanding warrants for First Degree Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, related to the shooting of Tasheka Reid Aleryani, 47 of Statesville. 

Ms. Aleryani died of her injuries at Carolinas Medical Center around 7:30pm on March 13, 2024.

Griffin, Jr. was transported to the Iredell County Detention Center, where he was brought before Magistrate Chambers. He received no bond on the First-Degree Murder charge and a $5,000 secured bond on the Possession of Firearm by Felon charge.

Griffin, Jr. is scheduled for his initial court appearance on Monday, March 18, 2024.

Shooting Incident - Gay Street

At approximately 8:00am on March 13, 2024, the Statesville Police Department received reports of a shooting in the 1900 block of Gay Street. Upon arrival, officers found James Adrian Griffin, 43 of Statesville, in the roadway with an injury to his head. Inside the residence, Tasheka Reid Aleryani, 47 of Statesville, was discovered suffering from gunshot wounds to the head and chest.

Medical assistance was provided by the Statesville Fire Department and Iredell County EMS. Aleryani was transported to Carolinas Medical Center, while Griffin was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for treatment.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Griffin and Aleryani were involved in an altercation within the residence, leading to Griffin firing shots at Aleryani. The incident is under investigation by the Statesville Police Department's Violent Crimes Unit and Criminal Investigations Division.
