Arrest Made in 2019 Sex Abuse Case Following New Evidence

Statesville, NC – July 5, 2024 – In December of 2019, Investigators of the Statesville Police Department were alerted to a possible sex abuse case involving a young victim. The initial investigation included an interview of the child at Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center. However, due to the age of the child and the information disclosed at that time, the case was unable to be prosecuted.

In June of 2024, the Statesville Police Department was contacted by the Iredell County Department of Social Services with new information from the victim. The child was re-interviewed at Dove House Children’s Advocacy Center, leading to the reopening of the criminal case. Following a thorough investigation, SPD Investigators obtained charges against Steven Joseph Borek, 60, of Concord.

The Statesville Police Department sought the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Services – Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force (CRFTF) to locate and apprehend Borek. On July 3, 2024, U.S. Marshals located Borek in a travel camper at a Pilot gas station in Rowan County. After a standoff, U.S. Marshals, with the aid of the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, forced entry into the camper and found Borek inside, suffering from a self-inflicted knife wound. Borek was transported to Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center, where he was treated and is expected to survive.

Borek has been charged with six counts of First-Degree Statutory Sex Offense and six counts of Indecent Liberties with a Minor. He will be taken into custody upon his medical release.

The Statesville Police Department extends its gratitude to the U.S. Marshals Services – Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force and Rowan County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance in this case.
