Taking a Stand Against Domestic Violence

Last Updated 10/5/2023Posted in Police News, Latest City News

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time when we join the nationwide effort to shed light on this pressing issue that affects countless individuals and families in our community. The Statesville Police Department is committed to combating this problem, not only through enforcement but also through education and awareness.

Understanding Domestic Violence

Domestic violence encompasses a range of abusive behaviors within intimate relationships, including physical, emotional, financial, and psychological abuse. It can happen to anyone, regardless of age, gender, race, or socioeconomic status. Recognizing the signs of domestic violence is crucial, as early intervention can save lives.

Resources

In Statesville, we are fortunate to have a network of organizations and agencies dedicated to assisting domestic violence survivors and preventing further abuse.

  • The SPD Domestic Violence Task Force conducts criminal investigations individually and in conjunction with other officers and agencies regarding incidents of domestic violence within the City of Statesville.  They also assist victims in the application process for domestic violence protection orders, provide victims with information and referrals for community resources, and helps victims create a safety plan.
  • My Sister's House is a local shelter offering safe accommodation, counseling, and support services for survivors of domestic violence.  https://www.fifthstreetministries.com/my-sisters-house/
  • The National Domestic Violence Hotline is a 24/7 hotline providing confidential support, information, and resources. Call 1-800-799-SAFE (7233).

How You Can Help

Ending domestic violence requires community involvement and awareness. Here are ways you can make a difference:

Educate Yourself: Learn about the signs of domestic violence and how to support survivors.

Speak Out: Don't stay silent if you suspect someone is a victim of abuse. Encourage them to seek help.

Volunteer: Consider volunteering with local organizations that support domestic violence survivors.

Advocate: Support policies and initiatives that address domestic violence and provide resources for survivors.

Raise Awareness: Use your voice and social media platforms to spread awareness about domestic violence and available resources.

SPD's Commitment

We are dedicated to working with the community to prevent domestic violence, support survivors, and hold abusers accountable. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 911. Remember, you are not alone, and help is available.

Domestic violence is a pervasive issue that affects our community. By working together, we can break the cycle and create a safer, more supportive environment for everyone in Statesville. Let's stand together against domestic violence and support survivors on their journey to healing and safety.
