Last Updated 4/30/2025

On Monday, April 28, 2025, U.S. Marshals Service Acting Director Mark Pittela presented Statesville Police Department Cpl. Casey Hoover with the U.S. Marshals Service Purple Heart Award during a formal ceremony held at Statesville City Hall.

The award honors Cpl. Hoover’s bravery and sacrifice during a tragic incident that occurred on April 29, 2024, while he was serving with the U.S. Marshals Carolinas Regional Fugitive Task Force. The team, which included local, state, and federal officers, came under heavy gunfire while attempting to serve a warrant at a residence on Galway Drive in Charlotte. Eight officers were wounded in the attack, including Cpl. Hoover. Four officers were killed in the line of duty, marking one of the most devastating days for law enforcement in North Carolina’s recent history.

The Purple Heart is awarded to law enforcement officers who are seriously injured or killed while performing their duties.

It recognizes extraordinary courage and unwavering dedication in the face of life-threatening danger.

During the ceremony, Acting Director Pittela commended Cpl. Hoover’s actions and acknowledged the lasting impact of the events of that day. Cpl. Hoover’s strength and commitment to service continue to reflect the values upheld by those who serve on the front lines of public safety.

The City of Statesville and the Statesville Police Department are proud to stand behind Cpl. Hoover and are grateful for his continued service following such a life-altering event. His actions serve as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers every day.
