Vehicle Theft Prevention Month: Let’s Keep Statesville Safe
Every 32 seconds a vehicle is stolen in the U.S. That adds up to more than one million each year. Many of these crimes are crimes of opportunity, and with simple precautions, they can often be avoided. This July, during National Vehicle Theft Prevention Month, the Statesville Police Department is sharing important tips to help residents secure their vehicles and reduce theft in our community.
Why Vehicles Are Targeted:
Thieves often look for easy access like unlocked doors, unattended running vehicles, or valuables left in plain sight. In many cases, the goal isn’t the car itself but what’s inside, such as wallets, tools, electronics, or personal items that can be quickly stolen.
Simple Prevention Tips:
- Lock your doors at all times, even in your driveway.
- Never leave your keys or key fob in or near your vehicle.
- Avoid leaving your car running unattended, even briefly.
- Park in well-lit, visible areas.
- Hide or remove valuables from sight.
- Consider anti-theft devices or GPS tracking systems.
If Your Vehicle Is Stolen:
Act quickly if your car goes missing:
- Call 911 or contact Statesville PD immediately.
- Share your vehicle’s make, model, color, license plate, and VIN.
- Notify your insurance provider to begin a claim.
- If applicable, contact your GPS or tracking service.
